Around a month ago, my friend invited me to the crybaby tour show in Heaven, London and I quickly took the opportunity up as a relatively new fan of hers! Plus who could say no to a show in Heaven, that’s awesome!
Now, if you’re a fan like me, you’ll know that she’s known for her quirky songs and kooky set ups on stage and I was not disappointed at all! The stage was arranged like a nursery room and she came on dancing in what looked like a cute lolita style dress (I couldn’t get through all the hardcore fans to really get close enough).
As I listen to predominantly metal and rock, you can imagine I was pretty lost as to how to dance to this sort of music as it certainly wasn’t mosh suitable! I had to resign to belting out all the lyrics with the rest of the crowd as well as miming stupid actions to all of her songs with my friend and her brother who I attended with!
All in all, I would rate the experience 3.8/5 due to the fact I had to watch most of the show through other people desperately trying to get shaky footage of the show on their phones! However the audio was insanely good due to the club set up and I was more than entertained by her crazy dancing up on stage to care about the guy singing off tune in my ear!
Digital drawing has always been a passion of mine which I had to unfortunately neglect due to A-Level Fine Art…however I’m back on track! As an Animator, I think it’s really important to start honing skills like this to better my digital creations and really start experimenting in recreating my traditional style in Photoshop as it’s something I really never even begun to get the hang of.
This challenge is something I really began to aid a potential upcoming project which will require a lot of illustrations and digital editing which will really put my skills and patience to the test. I didn’t want to jump in blind so every day I’m trying to improve something different.
Personally, I’ve always leant towards the scruffy styles as my hand just does not allow a first come clean line! However that’s the point, this is practise to make me clean up my lines because I can never sell any digital prints if they all look like awful line art (and let’s face it, colouring is so hard when your lineart isn’t clean!)
I have a fairly busy schedule for a student I would say, so it’s been making completing this challenge daily increasingly difficult with each passing day.
The important thing is that I try to create something as frequently as I can so I can keep up the practise. I also find its important to record my process of colour mixing to go hand in hand with the painting and share with others how I paint.
I definitely think that I’m getting the hang of gouache each time I try something new and it’s showing through my painting style and use of texturing.

I’m already a day behind due to a hectic day but I’ll be damned if I don’t catch up. Today was a bit more practise with ink and goauche and I’m super pleased with the result! I think it’s a good example of a good sketch, bad lineart resurrection situation if I’m honest.
I find myself often really liking my sketches and REALLY hating my line art if I do it and ultimately scrapping a lot of paintings and drawings however in the spirit of this challenge I simply stepped away from my drawing and came back to it. I must give credit where it’s due as well, goauche is fast becoming a favourite medium due to how easy it is to fix things with? I hated this lineart…now it’s great! And I just really love the quality of the paint and how it dries darker which really helps with adding highlights. I highly recommend it!
May the fourth be with you…ITS STAR WARS DAY and I’ve ended it with a rather shoddy drawing of Rey…oh dear.
Failing and making mistakes is all part of the process of learning and let me tell you I make so many therefore I think it’s important to share with you, Reader, a drawing which I really don’t like.
As a perfectionist – and my own worst critic – drawing in this medium AND on A4 scale is really difficult to me due to the lack of precision detail I can afford to have. However I push forward as this is exactly why I started to join in on this challenge! I’ll tell myself that it’s just practise to take away the sting in the mean time…
For May I’m taking part in an art challenge called #maywedrawdaily so I can get some practise going before I enter into an illustrative project alongside my animation.
I’ve always been intrigued by print art and gouache painting so I headed down today to my favourite art store (CassArt) to pick up some Indian ink refillable pens and some gouache paint! The employees were helpful as ever and I was soon on my way to Costa to get my drawing on as this hashtag was the perfect excuse.
The hashtag itself is set up by an artist called Audraauclair on Instagram and the aim of the challenge is to draw or paint something in your sketchbook every day of May. It’s free for anyone to join in so I suggest if you’re stuck on motivation to do something then this is perfect! I missed two days but it’s never too late to join in!
My friend Ellie directed me to this app on the Apple AppStore – the basis of it is that you record 1 second of your day every day (or in my case, use live photos too because the iPhone 6S live photos are gifts from God) so that you have a calendar full of video memories.
I immediately fell in love with this app the minute I got it as my life certainly isn’t a jam packed as it would need to be if I was a full on vlogger so this is perfect for me. I find these little videos hilariously quirky and a great way to share my month with people I never see in an easy to focus on format and without taking too much of their time.
Now I will be the first to say that I completely screwed up April by not filming everything horizontally (ie using live photos from the day when I forgot to film) but because I enjoyed it so much I’m going to endeavour to film something every day – which will also encourage me to film something interesting or search for something to film to fill my day. Of course you can cheat and add videos from other days – of which I will try to limit myself because let’s face it, no one’s days are all thrilling are they?
Hope you enjoy my April
